Decorating eggs is always a fun family Easter activity. While you can always dye your eggs using a dye kit, this year, try using some ingredients you already have in your kitchen. You can dye your eggs in so many different colours by using vegetables and fruits like cabbage, and onion skins to liquids like coffee. Here are easy and natural dyes for easter eggs.
Red Cabbage
Contrary to this veggie’s name, red cabbage can be used to achieve a natural light blue hue. Roughly chop or shred 1-1 ½ cups of the red cabbage per cup of boiling water in a medium pot. Add 2 tablespoons of white vinegar to the pot and let simmer for 30 minutes. Strain your red cabbage dye and soak your egg for 30 minutes to get your desired shade of light blue.
Red Onion Skins
Red onion skins give you the colour red when dying eggs. Place six onion skins in 2 cups of water and 3 tablespoons of white vinegar. Bring to a boil and let it simmer for about 15 minutes. Strain your dye and let it cool to room temperature. Soak your egg for 30 minutes or until you achieve the shade of red you like.
Onion Skins
Onion skins can be used to get an orange or a burnt sienna colour depending on how long your egg is dyed into the solution. Add 4 cups of peeled onion skins to 2 cups of water and 2 tablespoons of white vinegar and boil your egg in the dye to get burnt sienna. For orange, soak your egg in the room temperature solution for around 30 minutes.
Turmeric
For yellow eggs, turmeric powder is the best choice. Combine 1 cup of boiling water, 1 tablespoon of turmeric powder and 2 tablespoons of white vinegar in a pot. Soak eggs in the room temperature solution for 30 minutes to get a beautiful pale yellow shade. If this colour doesn’t say Easter, we don’t know what does! Blueberries
To achieve a dark blue dye, blueberries will do the trick. Add 4 cups of blueberries, 4 cups of water and 2 tablespoons of white vinegar to a pot, then bring to a boil to create your dye solution. Let your egg soak in the room temperature dye for around 30 minutes and voila!

Beets
Beets produce a pretty pink colour ranging from a light shade to a deeper pink depending on how many beets you use and how long the egg is left in the dye solution. For a pastel pink, roughly cut up 4 cups of beets and add them to a pot of 4 cups of boiling water and 2 tablespoons of white vinegar. Next, soak your egg in room temperature dye for about 30 minutes.
Red Wine
Pour around 1 cup of red wine into a jar and soak your egg in the red wine until you are happy with the colour. Rinse your egg with cold water and dry. Simple!
Coffee
For a dark rich brown colour, try your hand at black coffee. Simply soak your egg in 2 cups of brewed black coffee or for a more intense brown, boil your egg in black coffee for 30 minutes. Next, rinse your egg with cold water and dry.
