Sweet and savoury, cinnamon bun grilled cheese is the combination you didn’t know you needed in your life — a melty mashup we can’t get enough of!
Store-bought cinnamon rolls are the key to keeping this recipe quick and easy. We roll them out and flatten them (don’t worry, they will puff out into delicious, airy bites once cooked!) Topped with some fig jam, lots of cheese, and some arugula to freshen them up, these are a weekend must.
The cinnamon bun grilled cheese comes together in about 15 minutes, and they’re the perfect bite of sweet, savoury, cheesy, and delectable! Feel free to swap in some more savoury toppings. I think Caramelized onions or even a spicy relish would be a great choice!

Lay uncooked cinnamon buns on a parchment-lined plate or cutting board. Top with a small piece of parchment paper. Using a heavy lid, skillet, or burger press, press down on the parchment-covered cinnamon bun until flat. These will rise when cooked, so don’t be afraid to really flatten them!
Melt ½ tablespoon of butter in a small skillet. Cook one side of one cinnamon bun for 2 to 3 minutes till golden. Remove and set aside. Repeat with a second bun. You should be left with two buns that are cooked on one side each.
Warm up ½ tablespoon butter in the same skillet. Place one cinnamon bun uncooked side down. On the cooked side of the same bun, spread 1 tablespoon fig jam. Cover with 1 ounce of cheese and arugula. Top with an additional ounce of cheese. Place cooked side of second cinnamon bun on top of the cheese.
Cook for 2 to 3 minutes until golden.
Gently flip over and cook for an additional 2 to 3 minutes until final side is cooked through*. Remove and repeat for the second sandwich.
*if cheese isn’t melted to your liking but your buns are starting to darken, remove from heat and cover pan for 2 minutes until cheese is melty.
